BSA 100th Anniversary

BSA 2010 Logo

In February 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate 100 years as an organization. Founded as an outlet to prepare every eligible youth in America to become a participating citizen and leader, BSA has more than fulfilled its mission. Today, as we celebrate our first 100 years, we not on only reflect on our rich history, but lay the foundation for a strong future, as well.

100 Years of Scouting Logo

For 100 years, Scouting has been helping the youth of America find - in themselves and in the world around them - more than they thought possible. A century of building confidence and character is worth celebrating.

100th Anniversary Commemorative Patch

Scouts, adult leaders, and Scouting alumni: Rediscover Scouting’s impact on America through through the Year of Celebration activities and a series of awards that explore core Scouting values.  Earn our 100th Anniversary commemorative patch!

Through A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference, we will do just that.  Individuals can earn awards by demonstrating dedication to five of Scouting’s core values—Leadership, Achievement, Community Service, Character, and the Outdoors.  Participants can earn one award in each category. The program will be both fun and engaging and, most important, will show America the impact of Scouting through its commitment to these values.

The program is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Scouting alumni.

Additionally, the BSA has also teamed up with some great organizations to offer unique 100th Anniversary service projects that can apply towards your Year of Celebration Service award. These national opportunities will truly show what Scouts can do when they band together towards a shared goal.

A Year of Celebration will be in effect from Sept. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2010.

Ceremonies Using The Star-Spangled Banner Flag

During the full 100th Anniversary Celebration year, which extends from labor Day of 2009 to the end of 2010, we will have Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venture Scouts visible in public in their uniforms with flag ceremonies throughout the Baltimore region.  We are looking to our Commissioner staff to help make the connections between our troops, packs and crews and civic organizations, public meetings and other venues where flag ceremonies are appropriate.

With our association with a Baltimore monument, Fort McHenry,  the Baltimore Area Council has proclaimed the Star-Spangled Banner Flag (15 stripes and 15 Stars) as the official flag of the council during this Centennial Celebration.

Large and small Star-Spangled Banner flags are available for purchase at the Council Scout Shop. The cost will vary according to size needed but the 3X5 foot flag is generally the flag that you would use on your flag staffs. The use of this flag would be a special way each Scouting Unit could show the community their patriotism during this Centennial Celebration of the Boy Scouts of America.

We will have a model script that references our 100th anniversary, and Nentico Lodge will help train color guards conducting the flag ceremonies. Units are encouraged to post pictures and video through www.baltimorebsa.org.  Generations Connections is a National program which can help units participate.

To assist there are two scripts available, one for the Star Spangled Banner Flag and one for the 50 Star American Flag.  Use them and adapt them to your specific unit.

The Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its Centennial Anniversary in 2010. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America has not changed over 100 years. The value of developing moral character in the youth of our country, teaching the importance of participating citizenship and equipping our youth with the skills to live a healthy and physically fit life style is as relevant today as it was in 1910.

The flag before you today, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, has 15 stars and 15 stripes. It is similar to the flag that flew over Fort McHenry on the morning of September 14, 1814 after the British naval bombardment of the fort. Francis Scott Key was so inspired upon seeing the flag in the clearing smoke of that morning’s sunrise, that he wrote his famous poem entitled “The Defense of Fort McHenry.”  As you all know, that poem is now our National Anthem.

In honor of the upcoming bicentennial of that Battle, which we will celebrate in 2014, and in honor of the 2010 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Boy Scouts of America, the Scouts of the Baltimore Area Council has proclaimed the Star-Spangled Banner as our official U.S. flag.

Please join me in honoring our nation’s flag by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Celebrate Scouting Stamp from USPS

Celebrate Scouting Stamp

In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will receive an incredible honor from the United States Postal Service (USPS) in the form of a "Celebrate Scouting" stamp.

A tribute to the impact of a century of Scouting on the American landscape. Continuing the BSA's long tradition of service and good turns, we will bring deeper purpose to the Celebrate Scouting stamp by sending letters and care packages to the military men and women serving our country overseas.

Also included in this effort are the many veterans who have honorably served our country throughout the years.  Join us in the effort!
