Tips and Tricks
On the NationaPike.org website, we are offering an RSS, - thats Really Simple Syndication, - an RSS Headline feed. With this, your unit website can automatically display headlines in a box from the announcements on the NationalPike.org website. When the user clicks on a headline, they are taken to the article on NationalPike.org. When NationalPike.org posts a new article, the headline automatically shows up on your website.
See the extreme lower left corner (scroll to the bottom) of the Pack 1991 website for an example of what this looks like.
Method 1: You can display National Pike Headlines on any web page by including the following HTML snippit:
<iframe src ="http://nationalpike.org/np_announce_box_ext.php" width="40%" align=left frameborder=0 height=100% scrolling=no> </iframe>This will produce the headlines in a box similar to that on the NationalPike.org home page.
Method 2: If your website software can display RSS/XML feeds directly, the URL for the NationalPike.org RSS feed is next to the word Headlines on the Announcements page.
If you use this feature on your unit website, we would appreciate it if you send a note to the webmaster at NationalPike.org
iCalendar is a standard data format for exchanging information about meetings and events between different calendar programs, PDAs, cell phones, etc. Most programs that have planning calendars can import an iCal file.
One iCal file may represent a single meeting or a whole calendar's worth of events. The NationalPike.ics file has events from multiple years. The NationalPike.ics file is updated every time we have new announcements.
Once you download the NationalPike.ics file and open it with your favorite calendar/organizer program, such as the no-cost calendar program, Mozilla Sunbird, which can overlay multiple separate calendars representing your District, Unit, School, Work, etc.
The NationalPike.ics file is a beta test version. Use at your own risk. The worst that can happen: you may end up with dozens of duplicate events all over your personal calendar.
The NationalPike.ics file may not be accepted by all calendar programs. Importing/opening it twice may or may not result in duplicate events on your calendar. We cannot provide tech support for any problems you may have. But we would appreciate a note to webmaster@nationalpike.org if you find it is incompatible with your favorite calendar program. Please include the version number of your program. We will post a warning list here of incompatible programs.
Want to try a test file, instead of the entire calendar? Download Test1.ics and Test2.ics, which each contain a single event. They have events named "Test Event 1" and "Test Event 2", which are all-day events on 12/01/2007 and 12/02/2007 respectively.
